December 4 Book. What book - fiction or non - touched you? Where were you when you read it? Have you bought and given away multiple copies?
The answer to this one is simple: David Sheff's Beautiful Boy. It is the story of the journey that David and his son Nic (and their whole family) take through Nic's addiction to Crystal Meth. It is heartbreakingly (I don't think that's a word) honest. David is a beautiful writer and while I have read articles by him - his account of his life with Nic springs off the page. The love he has for his child is palpable and the pain he feels every time Nic slips further and further into the abyss of drug addiction brought me to tears multiple times. Imagine for a moment making the decision that the only way you will bail your child out of jail is if he allows you to take him to rehab afterwards. Or going months not knowing if your kid is alive or dead but you know they are living on the streets...somewhere.
Nic Sheff has written a book of his own that I have no read yet but I want to - I want to learn who he is because he is a man who is fiercely loved by his father.
I have loaned the book to a number of folks and everyone has the same reaction -- if you want to borrow it, let me know. I'd be thrilled to send it along.

I think about things like that could happen to my kids and I ALL the time.

Oh, did you also read Nic's book? Was interesting to hear his side of things. Didn't have the same depth of emotion, though.
